Many famous people were born in Iowa. Can you name some of the most famous people in these occupations:
1. First Lady of the United States?
Mamie Doud Eisenhower was born in 1896 in Boone, Iowa and served as the First Lady from 1953 to 1961 as the wife of President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
2. Major League Baseball Pitcher?
Bob Feller was born in Van Meter, Iowa in 1918. One of his several nicknames was “the Heater from Van Meter”. Bob bypassed minor leagues started for the Cleveland Indians at the age of 17. His career was interrupted for 4 years while he served as a Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy abord the USS Alabama during World War II. Feller led the American League in wins six times and in strikeouts seven times. He played 18 seasons with the Indians and recorded 3 no-hitters and 12 one-hitters which were both records when he retired in 1956. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on his first ballot in 1962.

3. Famous female actress?
Donna Reed (born Donna Belle Mullenger) was born in 1921 on a farm near Denison, Iowa. She graduated from Denison High School in 1938 in the top 10 of her class. Donna originally planned to be a teacher, but at the advice of her aunt, she decided to move to California to attend Los Angeles City College where she began performing in stage productions. She made her film debut in 1941 in the movie “The Get-Away” opposite Robert Sterling. She was in many other shows and movies throughout the years including playing a nurse in “They Were Expendable” opposite John Wayne who was born in Winterset, Iowa.![]()
